The Kids "Go For Your Life!" Expo

Between Wed 26th to Thurs 27th November, the Geelong Disc Golf Club will be introducing Disc Golf to approximately 400 primary school kids in conjunction with the Victorian governments "Go For Your Life" initiative. This will take place over 2 days with children from a variety of primary schools situated around the Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. I'm sure most of you would recognize the TV jingle if you heard it. Visit the website at www.goforyourlife.vic.gov.au

The kids will participate in a variety of Disc Golf putting and throwing games within a condensed environment. The club has recently acquired a bunch of brand new Innova DX Sharks weighing in at a measly 130-135 grams!



The Result...
The Go For Your Life Expo proved to be a great success! Two very hot days of Disc Golf for 6 lucky schools. The kids seemed to really enjoy themselves and were excited about the drills and challenges we set for the groups. Most were amazed at the distances that can be achieved when driving off the tee. Needless to say, drivers were a popular topic of disc discussion amongst the kids. Lots of natural talent amongst the groups, over both days, which was excellent to see.

The "Anne-Hyzer" Classic 004

On Sunday 9th of March 2008, the Geelong Disc Golf Club held the “ANNE-HYZER DRYZDALE CLASSIC 004”event at Drysdale Reserve.

A very hot day in Drysdale saw a small turn out of players, fighting the heat and running for shade. A neck and neck battle for top spot between Andrew Dowdy and Drew Muller came down to a playoff for 1st place. Dowdy eventually running away with top spot after a "nail-biting finish"?

On Sunday 27th of January, Geelong Disc Golf Club is hosting the 3rd "ANNE-HYZER DRYZDALE CLASSIC" at Drysdale reserve. This weeks Anne-Hyzer Classic will be slightly different though. After the 18 holes we'll have lunch together, and wish Andrew Ferguson goodbye, well... good riddance perhaps, as he takes off overseas for a while. Then we'll continue with another 9 holes so Fergie can TRY to win back his No.1 Bag Tag! Good luck champ. Your going to need it!!!

The "Anne-Hyzer" Classic 002

Sunday the 9th of January 2008, the Geelong Disc Golf Club held the 2nd ‘ANNE-HYZER DRYZDALE CLASSIC’ event at Drysdale Reserve. The introduction of a picturesque new par 5 hole for the 13th, with the pin sitting aside a 20-30 ft hilltop, tested the nerves in everyones putting game!

Another win for Andrew Ferguson who turned on a massive comback, gaining 9 strokes on the leaders after the first 18 holes, to runaway with a 3 stroke victory over Paul Arden.

The "Anne-Hyzer" Classic 001

On Sunday the 9th of December 2007, the Geelong Disc Golf Club held it's first ever the ‘ANNE-HYZER DRYZDALE CLASSIC’ event at the newly discovered Drysdale Reserve, located 10 minutes drive from Eastern Park.

This new area offers a significantly different experience to most courses in Australia and provides some interesting challenges. Players played 6 baskets on 18 tees including some very tight technical holes and some great opportunities for big arms to let loose as well.

A total of 10 players battled it out playing 36 Holes of Disc Golf throughout the day, on the newly designed layout. Most players were also competing for State and National ADG Bag Tags during the event, so both rounds were filled with pressure to perform. In the end though, Andrew 'Fergie' Ferguson came through again, beating Drew Muller by 4 strokes for another local win. Unfortunately Cassie Anderson had to retire her second round due to injury.

From all of us at the Geelong Disc Golf Club, we'd like to sincerely thank everyone for participating in our first ever Disc Golf event at Eastern Park. The day was a complete success, and we're already hard at work planning future Disc Golf days for the Geelong and Victorian Community. We have some great event ideas planned which we're looking forward to.


With 45 players on the day, and many others just coming for a throw, we were thrilled with the attendance as it has set a new benchmark for Australian Disc Golf events in the future. A special thank-you to all those who made the road trip from Melbourne and beyond. Your commitment to the sport and our club has not gone unnoticed.



For many players it was your first time throwing a golf disc and we were amazed at the high level of skills shown on the day. We saw some great improvement from all of you, especially the women, which was evident in your scores.

Where To Play

Here's your guide to finding the right location for playing Disc Golf...

Currently there are no permanent Disc Golf courses in the Geelong Region.
There are local people who frequently set up temporary courses with portable disc golf target/baskets. Contact Us to be informed about the next Disc Golf event in the Geelong region.

Alternatively, there is only 1 permanent Disc Golf course in Victoria.

In the mean-time, why not design your own course.
Dig out your golf discs and go to your nearest park. Pick out a tee or starting position, and find a target to aim for. It might be a tree, a sign post or maybe even a bin. Make up 9 or even 18 different holes and remember to work in some challenging obstacles to throw around to keep it interesting. Call up your friends and go throw!

What is Disc Golf?

Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It's cheap, easy to play and fun for people of all ages, genders, and physical abilities. The concept of the game is easier to understand when the term Frisbee® Golf is used.

Similar to traditional ball golf, players use special Frisbee's (Golf Discs) instead of balls and clubs, throwing them at an above ground target instead of a hole or flag. There are different types of golf discs used for different purposes, much like traditional golfers use different clubs.

The object is to throw a golf disc into the target for 'par' or better. (ie; the lowest number of throws) The targets are typically steel, net-like objects over which chains hang, better known as 'Pole Holes' or a 'Baskets'.

The player begins by throwing or 'driving' from a designated tee area and continues toward the target, taking each consecutive shot from where the previous throw has landed. Finally, a successful 'putt' sends your disc into the target, and the hole is completed. Natural challenges such as distance, accuracy, wind, trees, shrubbery and terrain changes offer disc golfers plenty of action and excitement during the course of the game.

Who Plays Disc Golf?

Disc golf can be played from school age to old age, making it the one of the greatest lifetime fitness sports available. Specially-abled and disabled participate, giving them the opportunity to take part in a mainstream activity. Because disc golf is so easy to learn, no one is excluded. Players merely match their pace to their capabilities, and proceed from there. There are events for men and women of every skill level from novice to professional. Permanent disc golf courses are found in countries worldwide, as well as throughout Australia.

Why should I play?

The ongoing fitness boom finds more and more people taking up recreational activities in an effort to improve health and quality of life. Disc golf provides upper and lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise, and promotes a combination of physical and mental abilities that allow very little risk of physical injury. Concentration skills increase by mastering shots and negotiating obstacles. Players of limited fitness levels can start slowly and gradually increase their level of play as fitness improves. Scheduling is also flexible; a round takes one to two hours, and may be played alone, eliminating the difficulty of scheduling tee times. And as in traditional golf, disc golfers find themselves "hooked;" increasing the likelihood of frequent participation. Disc golf offers year-round fitness, even in rain or snow. Perhaps the greatest attribute of the sport is the expense - or rather, the lack of it. A professional quality disc costs less than $20, and it only takes one for basic play.

And, of course, there's the sheer fun of the game - no matter what your age or skill level!
